RC first in UK to install Quemesa Digital Camera to TEM

The transmission electron microscope (TEM) at Rubber Consultants is the first in the UK to be fitted with the Olympus Quemesa 11Megapixel digital camera.

The previous film camera produced high quality images but had some drawbacks. In recent years the increasing amount of research into rubbers containing fillers such as clays and silica has required detailed analysis of their microstructure at high magnification. However, ultra-thin sections of these materials are often beam-sensitive and tend to split apart at the level of brightness needed to focus the image using a phosphorescent screen. The new digital camera enables micrographs to be accurately focused and recorded at low beam intensities which are less damaging to the sample.

Also the bottom-mounted CCD TEM digital camera provides obvious advantages of speed and convenience over film, and enables researchers and visitors to view samples in the microscope much more easily.

The camera was installed by Martin Bartels (pictured above with RC's Dr Robin Davies) from Olympus Soft Imaging Solutions GmbH. For more details on the Olympus Quemesa digital camera please take a look at the official website.

The new Retiga 2000R colour digital cameraA new Retiga 2000R colour digital camera from QImaging has also been fitted to our Leitz Ortholux II compound light microscope. The camera was chosen for its large pixel size, fast image capture, large field of view and compatibility with our existing Image-Pro Plus software. Using our full range of light microscopes we can now produce good quality digital light micrographs over a magnification range from 1 to 500x.
